New Congress convenes and elects House Speaker
On 3 January 2027, the newly elected US Congress meets in Washington and the House of Representatives votes for its Speaker. Democrat Hakeem Jeffries is on course for the role after Democrats won control of the House in the 2026 midterms. No specific coins are tied to the event, but it sets the political backdrop for US crypto regulation.
What is happening
When the new Congress meets on 3 January 2027, House members vote to elect a Speaker. Following the midterm result, Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries is on course to take the post and, according to MS NOW, would become the first Black Speaker. Democrats needed a net gain of only three seats; projections cited by NBC News, CNBC and MS NOW put the final majority at somewhere between at least 225 and at least 244 seats, with 218 needed. The count was still continuing when these projections were made.
The day also marks the start of two years of divided government. Control of the Senate was still open at the time of reporting, so the exact balance of power depends on the remaining races.
Committee control follows the majority. Maxine Waters, the top Democrat on House Financial Services and a sharp critic of the crypto business around the Trump family, would be in line to chair that committee. With committee gavels, Democrats can hold hearings, issue subpoenas and block Republican bills.
Why it matters
For crypto, the key effect is on legislation and oversight. The CLARITY Act, which passed the House in July 2025 by 294 to 134, failed in the Senate on 15 September by 49 to 50. If the Senate does not act before 3 January, the bill expires, and any new version would have to pass a committee led by Waters. TD Cowen analyst Jaret Seiberg expects investigations into Trump and his crypto ties under Democratic control. Senator Angela Alsobrooks, one of the negotiators, still considers a deal possible before the deadline.
Not everything depends on Congress. Stablecoins remain regulated under the GENIUS Act, and the SEC and CFTC can continue writing rules, so the focus may shift from legislation to the agencies. For holders and traders, the date is a checkpoint: it shows who controls the committees that shape crypto oversight and how much room remains for new market-structure laws. This is not investment advice.
