Zakura post-quantum signatures for Zcash transparent pool

TBA January 2027, date TBC
Online Location
ZEC Zakura

⚠ The date is not confirmed yet and may change.

Zakura, a Zcash full-node project, has set January 2027 as its target for introducing post-quantum hash-based signatures for the Zcash transparent pool. The plan involves ZEC and is a target month rather than a fixed release date, and it is still tentative.

What is happening

Zakura is a consensus-compatible Zcash full node led by Sean Bowe and Dev Ojha. It has named January as the target for adding post-quantum signatures that use hash-based schemes. The work covers transparent t1 addresses, the pool that holds about 70% of all ZEC.

The scope is narrower than some headlines suggest. The shielded pools are not covered by this plan and still need separate work. According to ZecStats data cited in the source, the shielded pools hold about 4.97 million ZEC, or 29.2% of supply, including 4.11 million ZEC in Ironwood.

Zakura is separate from the Electric Coin Company and the Zcash Foundation. For that reason the January target should be read as a project goal rather than a scheduled network upgrade. The specific date within the month has not been announced, and the timing may change.

Why it matters

Post-quantum signatures are intended to protect funds against a future in which quantum computers could break the signature schemes used today. Because most ZEC sits in the transparent pool, a quantum-resistant option for that pool would address the larger share of the supply. Holders of transparent funds are the group most directly affected, while holders of shielded funds would need to follow separate work that has no announced timeline.

For traders, the item is a development milestone to monitor rather than a confirmed release. Since it is a target month from a full-node project and not a coordinated network upgrade, delays or changes in scope are possible. It also sits alongside other Zcash items in the news flow, including the NU7 upgrade review planned for October 20, which is expected to address the mainnet activation height.
