Lighter LIT team and investor token unlock (one-year cliff ends)

30 December 2026, Wednesday
Online Location
LIT Lighter

⚠ The date is not confirmed yet and may change.

Lighter's LIT token is expected to begin unlocking team and investor allocations around December 30, 2026, when the one-year cliff set at launch ends. The date has not been confirmed and remains tentative.

What is happening

LIT launched on December 30, 2025, with a fixed supply of 1 billion tokens split among community airdrops, ecosystem growth, team holdings and investors. Both the team and investor allocations carry a one-year cliff, which means those tokens are locked until roughly the first anniversary of the launch. When the cliff ends, that supply starts to become eligible for release.

The unlock comes as Lighter runs a reworked buyback program. In its July 2026 tokenomics announcement, the protocol said every repurchased LIT would be burned. On October 11, 2026, it carried out its first programmatic burn, removing 2,452,017 LIT from circulation at the close of Q3 2026. The burn is funded entirely from trading fee revenue, and the next one is expected after Q4 2026.

Lighter is a perpetual futures exchange built on a zk rollup on Ethereum. It handled close to $39 billion in volume over the 30 days before the burn announcement, with open interest of around $766 million. Staking rewards of 6% annualized are paid from a separate 250 million LIT ecosystem pool, not from the buyback program.

Why it matters

The end of a cliff adds potential new supply to the market at the same time that the protocol is trying to reduce supply through burns. By July, Lighter had repurchased about 15.5 million LIT, roughly 6.3% of circulating supply, so the scale of the buyback can be compared with the size of the upcoming unlocks. The coming months will show whether the buyback-and-burn model stays balanced once team and investor tokens begin to unlock.

For holders and traders, the useful things to watch are the exact unlock schedule once it is published, how much of the allocation is released at the cliff and how quickly after that, and the size of the Q4 2026 burn. Unlock events are often followed closely because they change the amount of tokens that can reach the market, but the effect depends on whether recipients choose to sell or hold. Because the date is tentative, it is worth checking official Lighter announcements as the end of December approaches.
