JPYC in-store payment pilot in Osaka
A pilot for in-store payments with the yen stablecoin JPYC will run at a small number of locations in Osaka, Japan, from November 2026 to March 2027. The trial is supported by the local government and tests everyday retail use of the token.
What is happening
JPYC Inc. and its partners will test payments with JPYC in physical shops in Osaka. According to the latest company report, the pilot received local government support and covers only a limited number of locations. The exact start day within November 2026 and the list of participating stores have not been specified in the sources.
JPYC is Japan's first licensed yen stablecoin, classified as an electronic payment means under the Fund Settlement Act. It maintains a 1:1 peg with the yen and is backed by yen deposits and Japanese government bonds. Users can issue and redeem the token at par through the JPYC EX platform, and it is available on Ethereum, Polygon, Avalanche and Kaia.
The pilot follows a period of rapid growth. Cumulative issuance through JPYC EX passed ¥10 billion, up from about ¥8.08 billion in September, and the token was listed on the South Korean exchange Upbit on September 17. The company's report frames the next challenge as turning announced concepts and demonstrations into continued, secure everyday use.
Why it matters
Most stablecoin activity to date has centred on trading and on-chain transfers. A retail pilot supported by a local government is one of the first practical checks of whether a licensed yen stablecoin can work at the point of sale. Results from a small trial may show how smooth payments are for shoppers and merchants, and whether such use continues beyond the test period.
For JPYC holders, real-world acceptance is one of the main routes to utility outside exchanges. For traders, the pilot is a development to follow alongside other payment initiatives mentioned in the sources, such as the memorandum between Netstars and the Kaia DLT Foundation on integrating Kaia-based stablecoins into the StarPay merchant network. The scale of the Osaka trial is small, so it should be read as a test rather than a broad rollout.
