Zcash NU7 mainnet activation height review
On October 20, 2026, a review is expected to fix the mainnet activation height for NU7, the next Zcash network upgrade. The outcome concerns ZEC holders, particularly those who still keep funds in the old Sprout pool.
What is happening
NU7 is a planned Zcash network upgrade that shortens the target block time from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. To keep the issuance schedule unchanged, it triples the halving interval measured in blocks. The upgrade also adds the Network Sustainability Mechanism and disables v4 transactions.
The Zcash Foundation's Zebra 7.0.0-rc.0 release notes state that no mainnet activation height has been set yet. Setting that height is the task of the October 20 review. Until a height is chosen, the exact moment NU7 takes effect on mainnet remains open.
One consequence is already known: funds still held in the old Sprout pool become unspendable once NU7 activates on mainnet. Holders with coins there need to move them before activation.
Why it matters
The activation height turns NU7 from a general plan into a concrete point on the blockchain calendar. Once it is fixed, node operators, wallet developers and exchanges can prepare for the switch, and holders can see how much time remains to act. For anyone with Sprout-pool funds, the deadline is practical rather than theoretical, since coins left in that pool cannot be spent after activation.
For the wider market, the upgrade changes how the network operates: faster blocks, a modified halving interval in block terms and a new sustainability mechanism. Traders following Zcash alongside other catalysts, such as exchange-traded fund flows and the macroeconomic calendar, may treat the review as one more scheduled event to watch. The outcome should be read as a technical and governance milestone, not as a signal about price direction.
