Brave phases out Brave Ads Notification unit
Brave plans to begin gradually phasing out its Brave Ads Notification unit by the end of 2026, with the date listed as December 31, 2026. Rewards for other eligible ads are set to continue, and the change concerns the Basic Attention Token (BAT).
What is happening
The phase-out is part of BAT Roadmap 4.0, published on July 9. According to the roadmap, Brave will start winding down the Notification ad unit gradually rather than switching it off at once. Other eligible ad formats will keep earning rewards.
The roadmap also changes how BAT rewards are built. The existing model uses BAT purchases to fund ad rewards. The new plan adds transaction-related rewards and buybacks on top of that. Brave intends to direct a percentage of net revenue from specified wallet, card and BravePay activities toward BAT buybacks, though the roadmap sets no fixed percentage or purchase amount.
Other proposals in the roadmap include a redesigned Brave Wallet, BravePay (a stablecoin payment protocol), a Brave Rewards Card offering BAT rewards on purchases in eligible markets, and a Creator Contribution Protocol that would pay registered creators when participating AI products use their content. The roadmap does not set a single launch date for these additions. Brave also says it will share more details on BAT's role in the rewards system later this year.
Why it matters
For BAT holders, the change signals a shift in where rewards and token demand are meant to come from. The Notification unit is one of Brave's ad formats, and moving away from it, while keeping other ads, places more weight on payments, card spending and wallet activity as sources of BAT-related value. The effect depends on details Brave has not yet published, including how large the buybacks will be.
For traders and users, the key point is that the phase-out is gradual and the specifics are still open. Brave reported 128.3 million monthly active users and 54.6 million daily active users as of September 30, so changes to ad formats and reward mechanics affect a large user base. Note that the agent search payments Brave described use stablecoins rather than BAT, although the roadmap proposes adding x402 and Machine Payments Protocol support to the Search API over time.
