Abstract chain shutdown (Igloo Inc.)
Igloo Inc., the company behind the Pudgy Penguins, will switch off its Abstract layer 2 chain on December 15, 2026. Anyone holding tokens, NFTs or stablecoins on the network needs to move them to Ethereum or another chain beforehand; the event touches PENGU and ETH.
What is happening
Chief executive Luca Netz announced the closure of Abstract on October 6, 2026, and the company confirmed it the following day. According to the team, once the network is off, balances still sitting on it will no longer be reachable. The tokens do not vanish, but access to them does: whatever remains on Abstract on December 15 stays there.
Abstract was an Ethereum layer 2 built for consumer applications such as games and collectibles, with sign-up that did not require a classic wallet. Trade outlets cite roughly 400,000 users and between 300 and 325 million lifetime transactions; these figures come from coverage of the shutdown rather than audited accounts. Igloo never issued a token for Abstract, and Netz says the company funded the chain from its own pocket for 18 months, losing a double-digit million sum.
The reasons given are high running costs, thin liquidity, a weak supply of financial applications and little appetite among institutional investors. The shutdown follows another retrenchment: in June 2026 Igloo stopped developing the mobile game Pudgy Party and is now focusing on the browser game Pudgy World.
Why it matters
The deadline is the practical point for holders. Funds left on Abstract after December 15 will be out of reach, so bridging assets to Ethereum or another chain beforehand is the step the team points to. With roughly two months remaining, anyone with a balance on the network has a limited window to act.
For PENGU holders and traders, the effect is indirect. PENGU runs mainly on Solana, with additional deployments on Ethereum and the BNB Chain, not on Abstract, so the shutdown does not change the token itself. Coverage reports that PENGU fell by around 7 percent after the announcement, with sources dating the drop to October 7 or 8, 2026. More broadly, the closure shows that operating a dedicated chain is a continuing cost base rather than a mark of quality, which is relevant when assessing projects that run their own network.
