Standard Chartered Singapore institutional crypto custody launch
⚠ The date is not confirmed yet and may change.
Standard Chartered's Singapore unit plans to launch institutional crypto custody services by the end of 2026. The timing is tentative and no exact date has been confirmed; no specific coins have been named for the Singapore service.
What is happening
Standard Chartered intends to introduce institutional crypto custody through its Singapore unit by the end of 2026. The plan would extend the bank's custody offering beyond the jurisdictions where it already provides crypto custody: the UAE, Luxembourg and Hong Kong. The launch date is tentative and should be treated as a target rather than a fixed schedule.
The plan was mentioned in coverage of a separate announcement. The bank launched institutional custody for Ripple USD (RLUSD) on the XRP Ledger, made from Singapore and delivered through Standard Chartered Bank's DIFC branch, which is regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority. That launch is distinct from the planned Singapore service, but it shows the direction of the bank's digital asset business.
Alongside the RLUSD custody launch, Standard Chartered, Ripple and LMAX Group intend to make RLUSD eligible collateral for agreed LMAX products. Under the planned collateral mirroring model, the value of eligible RLUSD collateral is reflected at LMAX Group without the underlying stablecoin moving to the trading venue. That arrangement still requires final documentation, testing, regulatory clearance and internal approvals, with no completion date set.
Why it matters
Custody is a basic requirement for institutional participation in digital asset markets. A major international bank offering regulated safekeeping in Singapore, a prominent financial hub, could give institutional clients in the region another option for holding crypto assets. Standard Chartered's global head of digital assets for securities services, Waqar Chaudry, said institutional clients want to participate in these markets without compromising on how their assets are safeguarded.
For holders and traders, the main thing to watch is whether the Singapore launch happens on the stated timeline and which assets the service will support, since neither has been specified. Because the date is only tentative, any schedule slippage or details on supported assets would come through later bank announcements. The bank's wider activity, including its consideration of folding parts of Zodia Custody into its corporate bank division, may also shape how its custody business develops.
