Sparkasse crypto trading rollout to more savings banks
Crypto trading in the App Sparkasse started on 19 October 2026 at the first savings banks, and the Deutscher Sparkassen- und Giroverband (DSGV) plans to connect further institutions through to the end of June 2027. The tradable assets are Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), XRP, Solana (SOL) and Polygon (POL).
What is happening
Since 19 October 2026, the first Sparkasse customers have been able to buy and sell cryptocurrencies directly in the app. The product is called "Krypto - powered by Deka" and is run by DekaBank, the securities house of the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe, with custody handled in cooperation with Boerse Stuttgart. It is an execution-only offering: the savings bank does not give advice or check suitability.
There is no nationwide launch date. Around 350 independent savings banks each decide when to start. According to DSGV board member Joachim Schmalzl, another 30 to 40 institutions are to join each month, and in the first half of 2027 the association wants a large share of the interested savings banks connected. How many institutions will take part at all remains open.
Customers open a crypto account at DekaBank via the "Anlegen" section of the app; a current account at a participating savings bank is required, and approvals use tools such as push TAN. Trades are made at a bank-guaranteed fixed price rather than through an order book. Withdrawals are possible only to addresses of other licensed crypto asset service providers, not to private wallets. The private keys are held by DekaBank in a jointly managed omnibus wallet, and crypto assets are not covered by the statutory deposit guarantee. The offering has no staking function.
Why it matters
The Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe serves around 50 million customers through an app many already open daily. For those customers, buying crypto no longer requires a separate exchange account or custody solution, which lowers the entry barrier. The range is narrow, so users who want staking, a wider selection or payouts to their own hardware wallet would still need another provider.
For holders and traders, the practical points are the custody model, the fixed-price execution (where the spread is the main cost and is not disclosed in the documents reviewed by the source) and possible trading restrictions during unusual market conditions, technical faults or maintenance windows. The DSGV itself describes cryptocurrencies as highly speculative and notes the risk of total loss. Availability depends on the individual savings bank, so it is worth checking whether your institution is already connected.
