JPMorgan JPMD deposit token launches on Ethereum mainnet
On October 19, 2026, JPMorgan's Kinexys unit rolls out JPMD, its permissioned US dollar deposit token, on the Ethereum mainnet. The token had run on the layer-2 network Base since November 2025, and the move involves ETH as the network's fee currency.
What is happening
JPMD, also referred to as JPM Coin, is a deposit token denominated in US dollars: each unit represents one dollar a client holds at the bank. The legal relationship does not change. The holder keeps a claim against the bank, and the blockchain replaces only the booking infrastructure. Before the Base launch, the product ran in a pilot with selected counterparties from June 2025.
Kinexys told The Block that the existing depth of liquidity and tokenised assets on Ethereum made it the obvious next public blockchain for JPMD. Base bundles transactions and anchors them on Ethereum, while the mainnet is the base layer itself. That allows, for example, a tokenised money market fund and its cash leg to be exchanged in a single transaction. JPMorgan had already brought a tokenised money market fund to Ethereum in May 2026, and JPMD now adds the cash side.
The design remains closed within an open network. Access runs through blockchain deposit accounts maintained by the bank, and transfers are limited to approved wallets. JPMorgan has published no figure for JPMD supply, and there is no public contract address on the mainnet through which supply could be counted from outside.
Why it matters
The step signals that a systemically important bank is using Ethereum's base layer in production rather than in a pilot on a private chain. Kinexys cites more than three trillion US dollars of transaction volume since inception, based on the bank's own unaudited 2025 data. For the network, JPMD transfers generate fees paid in ether, but the size of that effect depends on volume the bank does not disclose.
For holders and traders, JPMD is not an investable asset. It is not traded on public markets and is not offered to retail clients, so it creates no direct demand for ether as an investment. Any tradable token using the JPMD or JPM Coin name on an exchange or in a messaging channel does not come from JPMorgan. A deposit token also differs legally from a stablecoin: bank deposits fall outside MiCA, whereas e-money tokens such as euro stablecoins are covered by it. What to watch is whether JPMorgan discloses volumes and how the deposit-token and e-money-token models develop side by side.
