ICON blockchain shutdown and end of ICX-to-SODA migration
On 31 December 2026, the ICON Foundation will permanently halt the ICON blockchain and close the window for swapping ICX into SODA. After that date, only an archive for looking up old transactions remains reachable.
What is happening
The ICON Foundation published the final date for the migration to SODAX and the shutdown of the ICON network in its own announcement, with the dates set back in May. On 31 December 2026 the chain is stopped for good, and at the same moment the option to exchange ICX for SODA ends. Since 30 September 2026 the swap has run in one direction only; converting SODA back into ICX is no longer possible.
The shutdown comes after a difficult year for the token. On 27 August, two signed withdrawal messages were reportedly replayed 1,492 times on the ICON chain, releasing 119.9 million ICX and 531,600 bnUSD and halting the chain for around 25 hours. The South Korean exchange Upbit then flagged ICX and decided to end support: trading in the ICX/KRW pair stops on 19 October 2026, withdrawals remain possible until 18 November 2026, and after that Upbit also ends support for migrations. Earlier cut-offs include Bitvavo (deposits, trading and withdrawals closed on 2 October, with remaining balances converted to euros by 12 October) and OKX (trading ended in early October, withdrawals accepted until 23 December 2026).
How much ICX remains unswapped is unclear. An independent count in early September found about 1.109 billion ICX still on the ICON chain, and no public progress indicator for the migration exists. No more recent reliable figure is available.
Why it matters
For holders, the year-end leaves two states for an ICX balance: swapped into SODA, or left on a chain that no longer runs. Balances held on an exchange that handles the migration itself are typically converted by the platform, but that support ends when the exchange delists the token. Balances in a private wallet do not migrate on their own; the holder has to start the swap through the project's official portal before 31 December. The practical deadline is often the day one's own exchange ends support, which can fall well before the shutdown.
For traders, the loss of Upbit's won pair removes a large share of remaining liquidity. Upbit accounted for roughly 45 to 48 percent of worldwide ICX turnover, and ICX had a market value of around $14.9 million at the time of the reporting, so the market is thin. Tax treatment of a swap versus a sale or forced conversion can differ by jurisdiction, and users with larger holdings should consider professional advice. Migration scams are common around events like this, so the swap should be opened only through the official project address, and a seed phrase should never be entered.
