HSBC RedCoin first independent reserve attestation
⚠ The date is not confirmed yet and may change.
HSBC's product documentation says the first independent attestation report on the assets backing its RedCoin stablecoin is expected after the fourth quarter of 2026, which places it in the first quarter of 2027. The exact date is not confirmed, and the report is meant to verify the reserve backing of the Hong Kong dollar-pegged token, REDCOIN.
What is happening
RedCoin is a Hong Kong dollar stablecoin issued by HSBC and redeemable one-for-one for Hong Kong dollars, subject to applicable terms. It runs on HSBC's own distributed ledger network and is accessed through HSBC-approved applications rather than open public blockchain wallets. HSBC began rolling it out on October 23 to more than 3.3 million PayMe users, who can send money to other users and pay merchants that accept PayMe.
In its October 23 disclosure, HSBC reported RedCoin circulation of HK$80.58 million against reserve assets of HK$81.58 million, meaning reserves exceeded the outstanding tokens by roughly HK$1 million at the reporting date. The bank describes the disclosed reserve holdings as cash and says it will publish regular independent attestations of the backing assets.
According to the product documentation, the first such attestation report is expected after Q4 2026. Because the timing is stated only as a period and not a specific day, it should be treated as tentative. HSBC has not announced who will carry out the attestation or a precise publication date.
Why it matters
For a stablecoin, the reserve is the basis of the promise that each token can be redeemed at par. HSBC's own disclosures are self-reported, so an independent attestation adds a third-party check on whether the stated reserves actually match the tokens in circulation. It is also part of the reserve, redemption and governance requirements of Hong Kong's Stablecoins Ordinance, under which the Hong Kong Monetary Authority licensed HSBC on April 10.
For holders and traders, the report will be an early indicator of how transparent RedCoin's backing is as usage grows. It will cover a token that is still young: HSBC has not disclosed how many PayMe customers have activated wallets or how many transactions have been completed. RedCoin wallets are also not ordinary deposit accounts and are not covered by Hong Kong's Deposit Protection Scheme, which makes reserve verification more relevant for users.
