EU Digital Identity Wallets availability deadline for Member States

TBA December 2026, date TBC
Online Location
European Commission Project

⚠ The date is not confirmed yet and may change.

EU Member States are expected to make Digital Identity Wallets available to residents, businesses and citizens by the end of 2026, with the deadline falling in December 2026. The exact date within the month has not been confirmed, and no specific coins are tied to this regulatory milestone.

What is happening

The European Commission is building an EU Digital Identity Wallet programme in which each Member State is expected to offer a wallet to its residents, businesses and citizens. According to the Commission, the wallets are meant to let users store information and share documents while keeping control over how much information is disclosed and to whom.

The target is for these wallets to be available by the end of 2026. The timing is described as an expectation rather than a fixed, confirmed date, so the status of this deadline should be treated as tentative, and the precise day within December 2026 is not specified.

The programme sits within a wider discussion about digital identity infrastructure. Related work includes the W3C Verifiable Credentials 2.0 Recommendation, published in May 2025, which describes cryptographically secured, machine-verifiable credentials that respect privacy. Blockchain is being explored in this field as a way to check whether credentials are genuine, where they were issued and whether they were altered, although it does not replace measures such as key management, wallet security and identity proofing.

Why it matters

For the crypto sector, the deadline is a reference point for how large-scale digital identity systems may develop in Europe. Selective disclosure, such as proving age without revealing an address or date of birth, is a feature often discussed alongside blockchain-based identity and verifiable credentials. Wallet rollouts at the national level could shape expectations around how identity checks are handled in financial onboarding and other online services.

There is no direct link to a specific token or protocol in the available information, so the effect on holders and traders is indirect and uncertain. The event is better viewed as a regulatory and infrastructure development to monitor, particularly for projects working on credentials, wallets and privacy-preserving verification. Rollout progress may also differ between Member States, and the sources note that new identity systems still need secure authentication, credential revocation and privacy controls.
