EU AMLR ban on anonymity-enhancing coins takes effect (Zcash/ZEC)
On July 10, 2027, the ban on anonymous accounts under the EU anti-money laundering regulation (Regulation (EU) 2024/1624) is due to apply, with Zcash (ZEC) among the coins affected. Certain obliged entities have an exception running until July 10, 2029.
What is happening
Article 79(1) of Regulation (EU) 2024/1624 prohibits credit institutions, financial institutions and crypto-asset service providers from keeping anonymous accounts. The wording expressly covers accounts that allow transactions to be concealed, including through anonymity-enhancing coins. Under Article 90, the regulation applies from July 10, 2027.
The rule addresses providers, not private holders. Owning Zcash privately is not affected. What falls away is orderly market access: an exchange authorised in the EU will effectively be unable to support ZEC trading or custody after the date. For certain obliged entities, an exception applies until July 10, 2029.
The date comes up in coverage of the Winklevoss Zcash ETF filing with the US SEC, submitted on October 6, 2026. That fund is not available to retail investors in Germany, because US funds lack the key information document required under the PRIIPs Regulation. The source notes that an earlier report gave July 1, 2027, and that the date in Article 90 is the one that governs.
Why it matters
For ZEC holders in the EU, the practical consequence concerns access rather than ownership. Once authorised exchanges can no longer list or hold the coin, the points at which selling or moving it is still easy shrink. The source points out that this window lies before the date, not after it.
For traders, the change may reduce the number of regulated European venues offering ZEC. Whether and how individual providers delist ahead of the deadline is not stated in the sources. Holders should also keep in mind the difference between holding a coin directly and holding a security, which are treated differently for tax purposes in Germany. This is not financial advice, and crypto assets can lose their value entirely.
