EU AMLR Article 79 ban on anonymous crypto accounts takes effect
On 10 July 2027, Regulation (EU) 2024/1624 begins to apply, and with it the Article 79 ban on anonymous accounts held with regulated firms and crypto-asset service providers. The rule is relevant for Zcash (ZEC), because it affects how privacy coins can be accessed through regulated European providers.
What is happening
Regulation (EU) 2024/1624, the EU anti-money-laundering regulation, prohibits credit institutions, financial institutions and crypto-asset service providers from maintaining anonymous accounts. Article 79 expressly covers accounts for crypto assets that allow the anonymisation or obfuscation of transactions. The regulation applies from 10 July 2027, which is about nine months from now.
The rule is addressed to regulated firms, not to private individuals. It does not prohibit holding Zcash. What is affected is the access route, meaning trading and custody through regulated European providers.
The text of the regulation does not name individual coins, and there is no official list with Zcash on it. Which assets a provider keeps or removes is that provider's own decision. Media reports that single out particular privacy coins are an interpretation, not an official determination.
Why it matters
For ZEC holders in Europe, the deadline sets a time frame for decisions about the custody route. Coins held on a European exchange rest on a claim against that exchange, so the exchange's treatment of shielded assets determines what users can do with them. Holders can use the period before July 2027 to check whether their provider is licensed under the new regime and how it plans to handle privacy-oriented assets, or to consider moving coins into their own custody. Not every wallet or hardware device fully supports Zcash shielded addresses, so the address type should be checked before any transfer.
For traders, the main point is that European liquidity and venue availability for privacy coins may depend on individual providers' compliance decisions. The regulation itself leaves room for interpretation, so provider announcements will be worth following as the date approaches. Zcash is a comparatively thin market: in a single day in October 2026 its price moved across a range of about 16.6 percent, far wider than Bitcoin or Ether over the same period, which shows how sensitive it can be to shifts in access and sentiment.
