Mainnet Launch Bitcoin

ECash (ECX) mainnet launch with seven drivechains

31 October 2026, Saturday
Online Location
ECX · BTC eCash

⚠ The date is not confirmed yet and may change.

eCash, a hard fork of Bitcoin that activates the BIP 300 and BIP 301 drivechain upgrades, is targeting a mainnet launch on October 31, 2026, with seven drivechains going live alongside it. The date is tentative and has not been confirmed. The launch involves the ECX token and Bitcoin (BTC) holders, whose coins are affected by the fork.

What is happening

eCash is a Bitcoin fork built around drivechains, a sidechain design first proposed by Paul Sztorc in 2015. Under BIP 300, deposits are locked in a hashrate escrow on the base layer, while withdrawals are released only after a miner vote that requires 13,150 approvals and typically takes three to six months. BIP 301 introduces blind merged mining, which lets drivechain block producers pay base-layer miners to include commitments to drivechain blocks, so miners earn extra fees without running drivechain software.

Seven drivechains are planned for the mainnet launch: Truthcoin for prediction markets, BitAssets for fungible tokens and NFTs, CoinShift for a decentralized exchange with atomic swaps, Thunder for high-throughput payments, zSide for shielded transactions, BitNames for a decentralized naming and identity system, and Photon for quantum-resistant cryptography. zSide is developed by an outside contributor.

Anyone can propose a new drivechain on eCash, but miners decide whether it activates. A proposal goes live only if roughly half of miners back it for about two weeks. The project has already held two rehearsal launches: Alpha forked from Bitcoin on August 23 and Beta on September 19, both issuing practice coins redeemable for ECX at a reduced rate. Mainnet is slated for around October 31, the anniversary of the Bitcoin whitepaper.

Why it matters

The project positions itself as a response to Bitcoin's slow upgrade process, offering a venue where new functionality can ship without waiting for base-layer consensus. If the drivechains attract sustained usage, eCash could serve as a testing ground for the drivechain model, though its success does not depend on Bitcoin itself adopting drivechains.

The sources also point to risks. A young network with a small mining base could see a hashrate majority approve a fraudulent withdrawal, with the long withdrawal window acting as the main safeguard. It also remains unproven whether users will move to the new ecosystem; existing Bitcoin sidechains have seen modest usage. For BTC holders, replay protection on eCash is opt-in, so an ordinary BTC transaction sent after the fork can be copied onto the eCash network, sending the matching ECX to the recipient. Holders are advised to split their coins before moving any BTC.
