Coinbase spot margin (up to 10x) and options rollout outside the US
Coinbase is rolling out spot margin trading with up to 10x leverage and crypto options to eligible traders outside the US via Coinbase Advanced and Prime, with the rollout dated to December 2026. The options market is anchored by Bitcoin (BTC), and the exact day within the month has not been specified.
What is happening
Coinbase has completed its integration of the options exchange Deribit and launched the Coinbase Global Exchange. The company says the combined venue will connect US and global crypto derivatives markets in a single regulated liquidity pool, including more than $30 billion in Bitcoin options open interest as of Sept. 30.
New products are arriving on Coinbase Advanced and Coinbase Prime over the following weeks: crypto options, unified portfolios with cross-asset margin, and spot margin trading. Leverage is up to 10x on selected major assets and up to 5x on other supported assets. Options go first to eligible traders outside the US, with US retail access planned later this year. Spot margin will not be available in the US except to eligible contract participants.
Coinbase also plans to bring back Coinbase Pro at the end of the year as a dedicated professional platform, with faster order routing for high-volume traders. The company cites a new high-performance matching engine for its derivatives markets and updated Coinbase Advanced fee tiers that start at $10,000 in qualifying volume. The link between US and global markets became possible after US Commodity Futures Trading Commission guidance in May 2026 allowed Coinbase Financial Markets to connect US clients to global crypto derivatives liquidity.
Why it matters
For traders outside the US, the rollout puts leveraged spot trading and options under one Coinbase account structure, with cross-asset margin in a unified portfolio. Access to Deribit-scale Bitcoin options liquidity may matter for those who hedge or trade volatility. Leverage also raises risk: losses can be amplified, and margin positions can be liquidated.
For the wider market, the move continues Coinbase's push toward what it calls an "Everything Exchange" and comes as competition for derivatives volume grows, with Robinhood recently unveiling crypto perpetual futures. Coinbase has also been expanding elsewhere, including regulated crypto futures in Canada with 10x leverage.
