Bitcoin options expiry
A large batch of Bitcoin (BTC) options contracts is set to expire on October 30, 2026. Expiries of this size can bring more price volatility around the settlement date.
What is happening
Bitcoin options expire in large volume on October 30. Options are contracts that give the holder the right to buy or sell BTC at a set price by a set date, and when a big group of them reaches its end date at once, positions are settled or closed out together.
The expiry falls within a busy stretch for the market. According to an outlook published by CryptoTicker, Bitcoin traded around $82,922 in mid-October. The 50-day moving average sits just below $80,000, close to the level where the price turned on Thursday. If that zone holds, the weekly high of $86,636 is the next upside reference; if it breaks, the next support lies near the 200-day average of about $75,800.
The US Federal Reserve's next meeting is scheduled for October 27 and 28, only days before the expiry. In its September minutes, most members considered a further rate rise appropriate before year-end, which adds to the macro backdrop around the date.
Why it matters
For traders, large options expiries are often watched because hedging and the unwinding of positions can coincide with sharper price moves in the days around settlement. Those who use leverage may want to keep their liquidation levels away from nearby support and resistance zones, since fast moves can reach them within minutes.
For long-term holders, a single expiry typically changes little about the broader trend. Bitcoin and the other major coins in the same outlook were trading above their 200-day averages, so the longer-term uptrend since the summer low remained intact at the time of writing. Short-term swings near the expiry are better understood as a feature of derivatives markets than as a change in the underlying picture. This text is informational and is not financial advice.
