Abstract chain shutdown and bridging deadline

Abstract chain shutdown and bridging deadline

15 December 2026, Tuesday
Online Location
CHECK Abstract

Abstract, the layer 2 network built by Igloo Inc., closes on December 15, 2026, and funds that have not been bridged off the chain by that date will become inaccessible. The event affects assets on the network, including the $CHECK token used by the Anichess game.

What is happening

On October 6, Abstract announced that it will shut down its chain on December 15, 2026. The project warned that any funds left on the network after that date cannot be accessed. Users can exit through the Migration Hub at migrate.abs.xyz or through the native bridge, which carries a three-hour delay. Stargate is listed as a third-party route. According to DefiLlama data, roughly $76 million in bridged value was still on Abstract as of October 7.

Igloo Inc., the parent company of Pudgy Penguins, built the chain, which launched on mainnet in January 2025. Chief Executive Luca Netz said Igloo had funded the network for 18 months and lost tens of millions of dollars without finding product-market fit. He said the team considered issuing a token to keep the network running but decided against it. Abstract's updated terms of service state that no recovery process is guaranteed after normal transaction processing ends.

Anichess has already moved its games and its Public Staking Pool to Base and is urging holders to bridge any $CHECK still on Abstract to Base. Stakers are directed to a migration page on the Anichess website. The studio's announcement did not mention the Queen of Time OG pool, which is limited to Season 1-4 players and Ethernal holders.

Why it matters

For anyone holding assets on Abstract, the December 15 date is a hard cutoff. Tokens, staked positions and other balances that remain on the chain after that point may become unreachable, so the practical task for holders is to move funds to another network in advance. The bridge delay and possible congestion near the deadline are reasons to avoid leaving the exit until the last days.

For $CHECK holders and traders, the shutdown consolidates the token's activity on Base, where liquidity and trading were already based. The closure also follows the shutdown announcement from the Blast layer 2 on October 2, which shows that operating costs have pushed other networks to wind down as well.
