White House cybercrime event on overseas crypto scams

21 October 2026, Wednesday
Washington, USA Location
White House / Trump administration Project

On Wednesday, October 21, 2026, the White House is holding a cybercrime event in Washington at which President Donald Trump is set to spotlight the administration's efforts against overseas crypto-fueled scam operations. No specific coin is tied to the event; the focus is on crypto used as a vehicle for fraud.

What is happening

According to a White House official, Trump planned to put special focus on the administration's work against transnational criminal organizations that use crypto in scams. The official said U.S. strategies for seizing funds and shutting down these operations would be discussed. Multinational criminal cartels have set up elaborate scam centers that steal money through relationship scams, phishing campaigns, ransomware attacks and other fraudulent means.

The administration says its law enforcement agencies have halted about $833 million in crypto connected to the overseas scams, and that 503 fraudulent crypto websites have been seized under the watch of the Homeland Security Task Force. The official added that almost 9,000 U.S. citizens have been informed that they are being victimized.

The event builds on earlier steps. In November, the Department of the Treasury announced a multi-agency Scam Center Strike Force that pursued so-called "pig butchering" schemes run by well-funded organized-crime operations in places such as Burma, Cambodia, Laos and the Philippines. Since last year, the U.S. has also issued a number of sanctions aimed at walling off the websites and infrastructure behind such attacks.

Why it matters

For holders and traders, the event signals that crypto-related fraud remains a visible enforcement priority in Washington. Crypto-related scams have reportedly stolen tens of billions of dollars from U.S. citizens, and the stated emphasis on seizing funds and disrupting infrastructure points to continued activity by law enforcement and sanctions authorities. Exchanges, stablecoin issuers and other service providers may be affected where their platforms are used to move scam proceeds.

The event also has a political dimension. With congressional midterm elections about two weeks away, digital assets have become a prominent theme in accusations of self-dealing against the president and his administration, and Trump's personal crypto ties may have become a political liability. Observers may watch how the enforcement message is received alongside that debate. The event is not a rule-making or legislative deadline, and no new regulation has been announced in the sources.
