Stacks Bitcoin Staking release

TBA October 2026, date TBC
Online Location
BTC · STX Stacks

⚠ The date is not confirmed yet and may change.

Stacks is preparing to launch its Bitcoin Staking system, a product release expected around October 2026 that will allow BTC holders to bond their Bitcoin and earn yield while staying tied to the Bitcoin network. The release involves both BTC and STX, and its exact timing has not been confirmed.

What is happening

Stacks' upcoming Bitcoin Staking release is designed to let Bitcoin holders bond their BTC into a staking system and earn yield on it. Ahead of this release, Stacking DAO has announced stBTC, a liquid staked version of Bitcoin built specifically for this system. stBTC represents BTC that has been bonded to Stacks' Bitcoin Staking mechanism, where the underlying Bitcoin stays locked and secured while the stBTC token itself remains liquid and transferable.

According to the announcement, stBTC is expected to launch just before the Bitcoin Staking release itself, giving holders an early entry point. Once staked, stBTC can continue to be used across Stacks-based applications such as lending platforms and trading pools, with a base yield accruing underneath. Stacks' Bitcoin Staking system is described as settling activity on Bitcoin through Proof of Transfer and reading Bitcoin's state directly, without relying on an oracle or a trusted relay, differentiating it from earlier wrapped-Bitcoin approaches that depended on centralized custodians.

The base yield under the system's initial parameters is expected to launch around 3%, funded initially by economic activity on Stacks and, over time, intended to shift toward being driven by real on-chain activity rather than emissions. Stacking DAO, the team behind stBTC, has previously operated STX Stacking infrastructure for more than two years without a reported security incident.

Why it matters

For Bitcoin holders, the release introduces a native way to earn yield on BTC while keeping that capital liquid and usable elsewhere in the Stacks ecosystem, rather than choosing between staking and deploying capital in DeFi. This could open a new avenue for otherwise idle Bitcoin to participate in on-chain finance.

For STX holders and Stacks-based protocols, the release could bring additional capital and activity into the ecosystem, since stBTC is intended to flow into existing lending and trading platforms built on Stacks. As with any staking or yield product, holders and traders should watch how the yield mechanism performs in practice and how the system's security and liquidity hold up once live, rather than assuming specific outcomes.
