Sparkasse crypto trading launch (Krypto - powered by Deka)

19 October 2026, Monday
Online Location
BTC · ETH · XRP · SOL · POL Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe / DekaBank

Since Monday, 19 October 2026, the first Sparkasse customers have been able to buy and sell Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Solana and Polygon (POL) directly in the App Sparkasse. The offering, called "Krypto - powered by Deka", is run by DekaBank and rolls out savings bank by savings bank rather than on a single nationwide date.

What is happening

"Krypto - powered by Deka" is an execution-only product available exclusively to Sparkasse customers. The savings bank does not check whether a crypto investment suits a client's financial position and does not recommend purchases. DekaBank describes the offering as aimed at self-directed investors and says it is a notified crypto asset service provider that holds the coins in custody, in cooperation with Boerse Stuttgart. The five tradable assets are BTC, ETH, XRP, SOL and POL; there is no staking and no stablecoins or small altcoins.

Around 350 independent savings banks decide on their own start dates, so availability in the app differs by institution. According to Joachim Schmalzl of the German Savings Banks Association (DSGV), another 30 to 40 institutions are to join each month, and the association wants a large share of interested savings banks connected in the first half of 2027. Customers open a crypto account at DekaBank through the "Anlegen" section of the app; a current account at a participating savings bank is required, and approvals use the usual online banking tools such as push TAN.

Several restrictions apply. Private keys are held by DekaBank in a jointly managed omnibus wallet, and withdrawals are only possible to addresses of certain other regulated crypto asset service providers, not to a personal hardware wallet. Trades are executed at a binding fixed price guaranteed by the bank for a limited period rather than through an order book. Crypto assets are not covered by the statutory deposit guarantee, and trading can be restricted during unusual market conditions, technical faults or maintenance windows.

Why it matters

The main significance is distribution. The Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe reaches around 50 million customers through an app many of them already use, so buying crypto no longer requires a separate exchange account or a custody solution of one's own. For German retail investors this lowers the barrier to entry, while the DSGV itself calls cryptocurrencies highly speculative and says it does not plan broad active marketing of the product.

For holders and traders, the trade-offs are practical. Coins held this way are not under the customer's own control, cannot be sent to private wallets, and earn no staking rewards. Costs are also worth checking: an earlier review by cryptoticker.io of the September 2026 price information found a 0.99 euro transaction fee and no minimum order size, but no stated spread, which in a fixed-price model is where part of the cost sits. DekaBank also points to the 1,000 euro annual exemption limit for private disposals under current German law, while noting that tax treatment depends on personal circumstances and may change. Investors needing a wider coin selection, staking or self-custody will still need a separate provider.
