Solana Alpenglow consensus mainnet-beta activation
Anza, the Solana software developer, has set the switch to Alpenglow on Solana mainnet-beta for Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at about 14:50 UTC. Alpenglow replaces the TowerBFT consensus protocol, and the event concerns the network's native coin, SOL.
What is happening
Alpenglow is the consensus protocol built to replace TowerBFT on Solana. According to Anza, the migration begins when a feature gate, SIMD-0384, turns on at an epoch boundary. That starts a 5,000-slot countdown during which blocks hold nothing but validator votes, so the process can be rolled back without losing any user transactions.
When the countdown ends, validators certify an Alpenglow genesis block backed by 82% of stake and pass consensus to the new voting component, Votor. Validators then resume processing user transactions, and TowerBFT is retired. Anza expects this handoff to take hundreds of milliseconds. Under Alpenglow, validator votes move off the chain as BLS-signed messages that are combined into a single certificate, which Anza says frees up block space.
The mainnet date follows earlier rollouts: Alpenglow took over consensus on testnet on September 24 and on devnet a day later. Anza says it chose the mainnet date after watching those networks, and that operators rehearsed the migration numerous times over the last five months. Testing included a bug bounty of more than 25,000 SOL, work from 115 security researchers, a simulation across 1,500 nodes and nine at-scale migrations. Validators approved the upgrade in September 2025 with more than 98% voting in favor.
Why it matters
Anza says finality is expected to fall from seconds to about 150 milliseconds; TowerBFT finality runs about 12.8 seconds. Faster finality changes how quickly transactions can be treated as settled, which is relevant for applications, exchanges and traders who depend on confirmation times.
Alpenglow also changes the network's fault tolerance. Anza states that the network can keep running with up to 40% of stake offline or misbehaving, split evenly between the two, compared with TowerBFT's tolerance of under 33% adversarial stake. For SOL holders and validators, this is a change to the core mechanism that secures the chain, so the activation window is a point of heightened operational attention. Later work named by Anza includes Rotor, a replacement for the tree used to spread block data, and faster handoffs between block leaders.
