Open USD stablecoin launch on Ethereum

30 July 2026, Thursday
Online Location
ETH Open Standard / Ethereum Institutional

On July 30, 2026, Open USD, a new institutional stablecoin backed by a consortium of more than 140 companies, launched natively on the Ethereum blockchain. The event, which has already taken place, involves ETH as the host network and marks a significant product release in the institutional stablecoin space.

What is happening

The Ethereum Institutional initiative confirmed the launch of Open USD, a stablecoin aimed at institutional users and backed by a global group of over 140 companies, including Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, BlackRock, BNY, Coinbase and Western Union. The token was built to operate natively on Ethereum from its first day of activity, rather than being bridged or wrapped from another chain.

Development and governance of the project are led by Open Standard, an independent entity set up specifically to manage the token under a decentralized governance model. According to the reported structure, profits generated by the reserve assets backing Open USD are distributed among ecosystem partners after a management fee is deducted, and participating institutions can issue and burn the token without fees or volume caps. The board overseeing Open Standard is made up of representatives from the consortium itself, which is intended to limit dominance by any single commercial player.

The choice of Ethereum as the deployment network was linked by sources to the chain's existing position in hosting tokenized U.S. Treasury bonds and other digitized real-world assets. Commentary from analyst Tom Lee framed the deployment as a validation of Ethereum for institutional finance. The consortium's next steps reportedly include technical implementation work and testnet issuance trials in the following months.

Why it matters

For Ethereum, the native launch of a large institutionally-backed stablecoin reinforces the network's role as settlement infrastructure for corporate and tokenized asset activity, potentially strengthening its standing among institutions already using it for tokenized Treasuries and real-world assets. For holders and traders of ETH, increased institutional stablecoin activity on the network could support broader usage of the chain, though this does not imply any specific price outcome.

For the stablecoin sector, Open USD's revenue-sharing model, which returns yield to ecosystem partners rather than concentrating it with a single issuer, represents a notable departure from how established stablecoin issuers have historically operated. Market observers may watch whether this model positions Open USD as a competitor to issuers such as Ripple's RLUSD or other established stablecoins.
