MSCI publishes final removal list for non-operating companies (incl. Strategy)

30 November 2026, Monday
Online Location
BTC MSCI

The calendar lists November 30, 2026 as the date tied to MSCI's final removal of non-operating companies from its Global Investable Market Indexes, a decision that confirms whether Strategy (MSTR) and Metaplanet fall out. The matter is linked to Bitcoin (BTC) because both companies hold large amounts of it. The source article describes the sequence slightly differently: the final list is due on November 11, with the switch taking effect at the close of trading on November 30.

What is happening

On the evening of October 15, MSCI decided to implement its proposal to classify so-called non-operating companies as ineligible for the MSCI Global Investable Market Indexes. According to the article, it adopted the rule "with minor amendments", which the index provider has not itemised. Strategy and Metaplanet were on the provisional removal list. Strategy sits in both the MSCI World and the MSCI USA, while Metaplanet features in the MSCI Japan IMI and several small-cap indices.

The methodology works in two stages. A core screen tests whether a company holds substantial operating assets. Companies that fail face a second screen based on five financial metrics, and ineligibility is triggered when an issuer is flagged on four of the five. For companies already in an index, MSCI built in a buffer: a member must breach the screen in two consecutive reporting periods before it is removed.

The change runs through the November 2026 index review. MSCI is also lifting the special restrictions introduced in January for companies with large crypto holdings, such as deferred index additions and the frozen treatment of share-count growth, replacing them with one general rule.

Why it matters

Index funds replicate their benchmark, so a removal forces funds tracking MSCI indices to sell the affected shares. Anyone holding an MSCI World ETF or savings plan currently carries an indirect Strategy position. Strategy itself estimates that roughly 3 to 4 percent of its outstanding shares are held by ETFs and funds based on MSCI indices, and its chief executive does not expect a material share price effect from that. A separate estimate of about $2.8 billion in passive selling, attributed to JPMorgan, refers to the earlier proposal and is not a yardstick for the rule now adopted.

The market largely priced in the outcome: a prediction market put the probability of Strategy's removal at around 80 percent before the notice and above 90 percent afterwards, and Bitcoin did not move on the announcement. The final list may still contain names not yet known, and the roughly 19-day adjustment window may weigh more heavily on smaller indices. Exclusion is not a delisting; the shares stay tradable. This is not investment advice.
