IoTeX first on-chain staking reward payout under IIP-59 (Zanzibar)
On October 20, 2026, IoTeX is set to make its first protocol-level reward payout to voting stakers following the Zanzibar upgrade. The payout involves the network's native coin, IOTX.
What is happening
IoTeX has activated the Zanzibar upgrade, which implements IIP-59. Under this proposal, the calculation and distribution of rewards for voting stakers now run inside the protocol itself each cycle, with no off-chain services or intermediaries involved. Every payout can be publicly verified on chain.
The first payout under the new system is scheduled for October 20. The upgrade was set to take effect at block height 53,533,081. Ahead of activation, Binance planned to halt deposits and withdrawals on the IoTeX network at 9 p.m. ET on October 18 (01:00 UTC on October 19).
Zanzibar also introduces BLS proof-of-possession checks when candidates register or update BLS keys. These checks close a rogue-key attack window ahead of IIP-52 signature aggregation.
Why it matters
For IOTX stakers, the change moves a key part of the staking process into the protocol. Because reward calculation and distribution are handled on chain, holders who vote can independently verify that payouts match the protocol's rules rather than relying on external tooling. IOTX is used for staking to support network security and to pay gas fees on IoTeX Layer 1, so the reliability of reward mechanics is relevant to anyone participating in staking.
For traders and holders, the first payout is a practical test of the new mechanism. It is worth watching whether the distribution arrives as scheduled and whether on-chain records are consistent with expectations. The added BLS key checks are a security measure that prepares the network for signature aggregation planned under IIP-52. This article does not offer price forecasts or investment advice.
