Bitwise Dogecoin ETF (BWOW) closure
This week ETF Decision Investment

Bitwise Dogecoin ETF (BWOW) closure

14 October 2026, Wednesday
Online Location
DOGE Bitwise

Bitwise will close its Dogecoin ETF, ticker BWOW, after 14 October 2026, with the final day of trading falling on that date. The fund tracked DOGE and is being shut down because of very low investor demand.

What is happening

Bitwise has decided to wind down BWOW, its US spot Dogecoin exchange-traded fund, after 14 October 2026. Bitwise chief executive Hunter Horsley described the outcome as "tragic" in comments reported by The Block.

Benzinga put the fund's net assets at about $684,000 on 8 October. BWOW recorded roughly $1.23 million of lifetime net outflows, which indicates that it never attracted meaningful capital.

The wider group of US spot DOGE ETFs is also small. Together these funds held about $17.0 million on 25 September, and Grayscale's GDOG accounted for $13.87 million of that, or more than 80%. The same week brought a record weekly inflow of $2.89 million, according to Criptolog, which still left the category modest in size.

Why it matters

The closure is a signal about demand for regulated Dogecoin exposure in the United States. A fund with under $1 million in assets could not build the scale needed to justify its costs, and its shutdown suggests that appetite for spot DOGE ETFs remains weak. It also leaves GDOG as the dominant product in a very small niche.

For holders of BWOW shares, the practical point is the approaching end of trading and the winding down of the fund. Investors who want to keep DOGE exposure would need to consider alternatives, such as another ETF or direct holdings of the coin. Details on how the fund will settle with shareholders should be checked with Bitwise and the relevant brokerage.

For traders, the event adds to a mixed backdrop for Dogecoin. The coin has traded near $0.087 after a sharp drop on 7 and 8 October, and corporate demand has faded as well; CleanCore sold substantially all of its roughly 463 million DOGE on 20 July 2026. The ETF closure is one more data point on institutional interest, not a direct market mechanism.
