Kaia first KAIA burn of unpaid Contribution Reward tokens (2,463,579 KAIA)

Kaia first KAIA burn of unpaid Contribution Reward tokens (2,463,579 KAIA)

KAIA Kaia DLT Foundation

On October 21, 2026, the Kaia DLT Foundation will burn 2,463,579 KAIA on-chain, the first tranche of unpaid Contribution Reward tokens. The date was moved up from the originally planned November schedule.

What is happening

The Kaia DLT Foundation announced on October 14 that it will burn undistributed tokens from its Contribution Reward (CR) program. Unpaid rewards from the first two settlement periods total 4,905,146 KAIA. The first tranche of 2,463,579 KAIA is set for burning on October 21, and the second tranche of 2,441,567 KAIA is scheduled for November.

The Contribution Reward system was introduced after an on-chain governance vote (GP-21) in July. It replaced the earlier Proposal Reward model, in which 10% of block rewards went to the Governance Council in a lump sum. Rewards are now distributed based on actual contributions to the network. The monthly budget is fixed at 2.5 million KAIA, and any tokens left undistributed because of unrecognized contributions are burned rather than retained by the foundation.

The burn is not planned as a one-time event. At each epoch settlement, the burn amount will be confirmed and executed on-chain under procedures published in the operating guide. Burn transactions and cumulative burn volumes will be disclosed in monthly operating reports on the governance forum. Starting with Epoch 4 on October 21, the yen-pegged stablecoin JPYC will also count toward contribution performance, converted to USDT value using the epoch average price from the Orakl oracle and subject to the same 1:10 ratio as USDT.

Why it matters

For KAIA holders, the burn removes tokens that would otherwise remain unallocated, so they do not accumulate at the foundation or enter the market. The burn limits growth in circulating supply and keeps rewards concentrated among participants who actually contribute to the network.

For traders and observers, the regular, on-chain nature of the burns makes them verifiable events. The October 21 transaction is the first of a recurring process, and later amounts will depend on how much of each monthly 2.5 million KAIA budget goes undistributed. The addition of JPYC also widens the range of stablecoins that count toward contributions, in line with the foundation's stated aim of building a payment and settlement network for Asian stablecoins.
