Cboe launches binary options on crypto-company KPIs
⚠ The date is not confirmed yet and may change.
Cboe Global Markets plans to list cash-settled binary options tied to performance metrics of crypto-linked public companies sometime in October 2026, following SEC approval dated Oct. 13. The exact launch day has not been set, and the contracts are linked to the crypto market through bitcoin (BTC) mining output and company activity rather than to the BTC price itself.
What is happening
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission approved a Cboe rule change that allows binary options on key performance indicators of a select group of publicly traded companies. A binary option is the simplest options contract: it resolves a yes-or-no question, such as whether Coinbase's trading volume will exceed a set number by a specific date.
The contracts are cash-settled and European-style, meaning they can be exercised only at expiration. They will settle on figures reported in companies' SEC filings rather than on numbers from earnings presentations. The metrics include trading volume at Coinbase (COIN), customer count and revenue at Robinhood Markets (HOOD), and bitcoin production at MARA Holdings (MARA).
Cboe and Robinhood announced the plan on Sept. 30 at Robinhood's HOOD Summit and said both would waive fees through the end of 2026. Robinhood is expected to be the first brokerage to offer the contracts to retail investors. Trading cannot begin until the clearing house, Cboe Clear U.S., receives provisional registration, and a separate application is still pending. Because of this, the October timing remains tentative.
Why it matters
The contracts give traders a way to take a position on the operating results of crypto-linked companies without wagering directly on the price of bitcoin. Commentator Eleanor Terrett noted that the SEC approved this specific securities-options structure while leaving room for differently structured contracts to fall under the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
SEC Chairman Paul Atkins said the approval does not affect similar contracts overseen by the CFTC, such as those on prediction market platform Kalshi. He described the decision as reflecting "a new spirit of harmony, innovation, and investor choice." For market participants, the key points to watch are the clearing house registration, the exact start date, the first list of available contracts and how retail brokers present them. The product is a derivative on company metrics, so its results depend on filed figures, not on market prices.
