2nd Annual Ethereum Post-Quantum Research Retreat

09–12 October 2026, Fri–Mon
Cambridge, UK Location
ETH Ethereum Foundation

The Ethereum Foundation's Post-Quantum Security team held its second annual research retreat in Cambridge, United Kingdom, from 9 to 12 October 2026. The event focused on quantum-resistant cryptography for Ethereum and concerns the ETH network as a whole.

What is happening

The retreat is the annual gathering of the Ethereum Foundation's Post-Quantum Security team, a dedicated group formed in January 2026 and led by Thomas Coratger. It brings together work on making Ethereum's cryptography resistant to future quantum computers. The team's progress is tracked publicly at pq.ethereum.org. The sources describe the event as a planned research retreat; they do not publish an agenda, speaker list or outcomes, so nothing beyond its stated focus is known about what was discussed.

The retreat takes place against an active research program. The team runs weekly interoperability devnets with more than 10 client teams, including Lighthouse, Grandine, Zeam, Ream Labs and PierTwo. It also backs a $1 million Poseidon Prize aimed at improving hash-based cryptographic primitives, and maintains open-source implementations such as leanXMSS, leanVM, leanSpec, leanSig and leanMultisig under the leanEthereum GitHub organization.

The wider roadmap targets four vulnerable areas: consensus-layer BLS signatures, KZG data availability commitments, ECDSA account signatures, and application-layer ZK proofs. The team has outlined migration milestones, which are planning goals rather than guaranteed commitments, aiming to complete core post-quantum infrastructure by approximately 2029.

Why it matters

Quantum computers are expected to eventually break the elliptic curve cryptography that protects Ethereum accounts and validator consensus. Google Quantum AI research published in March 2026 estimated that breaking 256-bit elliptic curve cryptography could require roughly 1,200 logical qubits, fewer than earlier estimates. Current hardware remains far from that scale, and the sources state this is not an imminent threat and that no action is needed from users today. Because cryptographic transitions take years, work such as this retreat is preparation rather than a response to an active attack.

For ETH holders and traders, the event is a research milestone rather than a protocol change: it does not alter the network or trigger an upgrade. It is, however, one signal of how the Ethereum ecosystem is organizing long-term security work, including the account abstraction approach (EIP-8141, considered for the Hegotá upgrade) that would let users move to post-quantum signatures over time.
