Volatility Shares VS Trust 3x Bitcoin and Ether ETP launch (BITH, ETHK)
⚠ The date is not confirmed yet and may change.
The first US exchange-traded products offering 3x daily leveraged exposure to Bitcoin and Ether, proposed under the tickers BITH and ETHK, could begin listing in October 2026. The exact start date is not confirmed and depends on the SEC declaring Volatility Shares' registration effective.
What is happening
On October 2, the SEC approved a rule change from Cboe BZX that allows 3x leveraged crypto products to be listed in the US. The VS Trust from Volatility Shares includes six funds, covering Bitcoin, Ethereum, gold, silver, crude oil and natural gas. The Bitcoin and Ether funds are proposed to trade as BITH and ETHK.
Trading has not started. Although the exchange listing rules have been approved, Volatility Shares still needs the SEC to announce the effective date of its Form S-1 registration, and the order sets no deadline. The products are based on futures rather than spot prices: the crypto funds are designed to track CME Group futures and use cash collateral to maintain exposure. The stated annual management fee is 1.85%.
Despite the "ETF" label, these are Commodity-Based Trust Shares governed by the Securities Act of 1933, not the 1940 Act, so they lack some protections of traditional ETFs, such as board oversight. Volatility Shares currently offers 2x products, BITX and ETHU, and the new funds would raise the leverage ceiling to 3x.
Why it matters
The approval widens the range of regulated leveraged crypto instruments available to US traders. Analysts describe it as a notable win for the sponsor and a sign that the SEC is willing to review more complex crypto products even without market structure legislation.
The products carry structural risks. They reset daily, so they do not deliver three times the return of Bitcoin or Ether over periods longer than one day. The prospectus illustrates that a 3x daily fund would lose about 5.45%, before fees and financing costs, if the underlying asset returns to its starting level after a two-day swing. Futures roll costs and daily rebalancing add further drag, and the prospectus states the products are not suitable for all investors. For holders of spot ETFs or the coins themselves, the launch changes nothing directly; for short-term traders, it adds a new, high-risk tool. Flows into Ethereum ETFs were mixed after the approval, so the effect on underlying demand is unclear.
